Is it possible to have the application log weather information to a database directly? To SQL or mySQL? I know about exporting log files and reading them into the db but am hoping for a more direct/real-time process.

no, there is no way to do that directly to a database like mysql.
You can only take the way, you already mentioned.
I think, one reason may be, that the stations with their sensor are so different, that you cannot create a database, which fits for all the stations.
